[CCM]🌿 THE BIBLE — THEIR PRAYERS | #10 Joseph’s Prayer
〈The Bigger Picture〉
“I could only see the pieces, but You were painting the bigger picture.”
Joseph was once his father’s beloved son. But jealousy turned his brothers against him. His colorful coat was torn away, he was thrown into a pit, and he was sold into slavery in a foreign land.
He could not have understood why his life had taken such a painful turn.
“God, why?”
Far from home, Joseph served faithfully in Egypt. Even when temptation came, he refused to betray his faith. Yet his integrity led him to prison, and the person who had promised to remember him eventually forgot him.
To the world, Joseph seemed forgotten. But God had not forgotten him.
In time, Joseph stood before Pharaoh and interpreted his dreams—not by his own wisdom, but through the understanding God gave him. He rose to become a ruler in Egypt, entrusted with preparing for the famine and preserving many lives.
Then one day, the brothers who had sold him stood before him, bowing down.
Joseph could have taken revenge. He could have made them feel the pain they had caused him. Instead, he wept.
“Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:19–20)
Joseph did not deny the evil that had been done to him. But he came to see that human wrongdoing did not have the final word. God had worked through circumstances Joseph could never have understood at the time, bringing life and hope out of years of suffering.
As I reflect on Joseph’s prayer, I think about the unfinished stories in our own lives.
There are moments when we can see only fragments: a painful loss, a closed door, a delayed answer to prayer, or a season when doing what is right seems to bring even more hardship.
We wonder why. We question the road ahead. Sometimes, we cannot imagine how the broken pieces could ever belong to a beautiful whole.
But *not being able to see the bigger picture does not mean God has stopped working.*
Joseph could not see the palace while he was in the pit. He could not foresee his reunion with his father while sitting in prison. He could only live through one day at a time, holding on to the faithfulness of God.
And when the time came, he discovered that his story was larger than the suffering he had endured.
Even at the end of his life, Joseph continued to trust God’s promise. He spoke of the day God would lead His people out of Egypt and asked that his bones be carried with them to the promised land. He was placing his hope in a future he would not live to see.
That is the faith this song seeks to express: trusting God not only with the chapters we understand, but also with the pages we have yet to see.
Perhaps you are living through a season that feels like a collection of broken pieces. Perhaps you are still waiting for an answer, healing from a wound, or wondering why your path has been so difficult.
You do not have to understand everything today.
May Joseph’s prayer remind you that your present pain does not have to be the final chapter of your story. May you find the strength to take the next step, trusting that God sees what you cannot yet see.
I could only see the pieces, but You were painting the bigger picture.
People may abandon us, but God does not abandon us. He can bring good even out of what was intended for harm, and His faithfulness reaches beyond the limits of our understanding.
🙏 Lord, I can see only the pieces, but I trust that You see the whole.
I place the tomorrow I cannot see into Your hands.
May Your goodness fulfill its purpose in my life.
May their prayers become our prayers.
May their tears become our tears.
May their faith awaken our faith.
From Their Hearts to Our Prayer.
