This prestigious event, which brought together the finest drummers from across the Asia-Pacific region, not only showcased the contestants' exceptional talent but also delivered a world-class drumming feast for Hong Kong music enthusiasts. Opening Concert: Grammy Master Sets the Stage The festival opened on June 27 with an electrifying performance by six-time Grammy winner Daniel Ho and his band, Daniel Ho & Friends. Their signature fusion of Hawaiian vibes with world music set a dazzling tone for this year’s festival. Fierce Competition: Divisional Competition and Semi-Final Highlights This year’s Asia-Pacific Drummer Competition featured five categories, including the Drumset category dedicated to Hong Kong’s youth, as well as Drumset and Snare categories for professional youth and open categories across the Asia-Pacific region. Contestants from cities such as Kaohsiung, Shenzhen, Quanzhou, Bangkok, Malacca, Chiang Mai, Beijing, and Shanghai competed head-to-head, demonstrating the immense talent and potential of Asia-Pacific drummers. Preliminary Round: Contestants were required to submit video performances of both assigned fundamental rudiment piece, and a piece of their own choice, which were reviewed by world snare drum solo champion Kaito Haruta and the festival's founder, Dr. Tang Lok Yin. Semi-Finals: Held from June 27 to 28, the semi-finals were adjudicated by a professional panel, including Nate Wong (drummer of Nowhere Boys), music producer Julian Chan, Baby Giant Drumline coach Jeff Leung, and Festival Director and Producer Dr. Tang Lok Yin. Contestants showcased their skills across self-selected pieces, free drum solos, and the intense single stroke speeding up battles. This year’s speeding up battle set a record of 150 BPM for 32nd notes, propelling the competition to its first highlight. Grand Finals: A Night of Musical Dialogue and Champions are Crowned The Grand Finals on July 1 marked the pinnacle of the competition. The esteemed judging panel included internationally renowned drummer Senri Kawaguchi, keyboardist Jun Abe, bassist Juna Serita, saxophonist Miho Terachi, and Dr. Tang Lok Yin. Together, they witnessed the contestants’ multifaceted talents and extraordinary performances. The most anticipated segment of the evening was the Free Jam Session, where finalists shared the stage with the judging panel. Together, they performed four pieces — EUPHORIA, J Funk, Anywhere But Here, and Hunter — igniting the audience with dynamic musical exchanges. The evening concluded with a stunning final performance by last-held Asia-Pacific Open Class champion 2023, Luke Jozsua Danneil Lumunon from Indonesia, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
