On the 17th June 2023 Prestwick welcomed the mighty Avro Lancaster of the (RAF) Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). The aircraft had been performing flypasts/displays throughout the day and dropped into Prestwick on a fuel stop. The aircraft spent a short time on the ground before departing south headed for its next flypast at Lake Windermere in Cumbria, England.
The Avro Lancaster is a four Rolls Royce merlin engine second world war era heavy bomber operated by the RAF at that time. The aircraft is now preserved in flying condition by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial flight based at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The BBMF also operate other second world war era aircraft including the Spitfire and Hurricane. The lancaster pays tribute to all the members of bomber command in the second world war. Only 2 Lancaster remain in flying condition including this and another being owned and flown by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
This particular aircraft PA474 was built as a B Mk 1 (B1) by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd at its Broughton factory near Chester in 1945.
The Lancaster was a highly capable aircraft of its era and famously took part in the dams raid (Operation Chastise) of May,1943, when Lancasters of 617sqn dropped the bouncing bomb on the dams of the Ruhr valley.
