What if you're afraid to try something new because you're worried you won't be good at it? Being a beginner doesn't mean you're incapable. It means you're learning. In this episode of Don't Cut Your Own Bangs, therapist and speaker Danielle Ireland talks with Alice O'Connell, founder of Learning to Knit, about perfectionism, creativity, anxiety, and the unexpected freedom of being bad at something long enough to learn it. Alice has taught people to knit for more than 20 years. She's watched beginners accomplish something entirely new, then immediately focus on what they did wrong instead of celebrating what they just made. Together, we explore why learning can feel so vulnerable, how creative hobbies can give us a break from the pressure to perform, and why making something simply because it feels good is a perfectly good reason to begin. Alice also shares her experience with breast cancer and how knitting helped her find comfort, connection, and a sense of identity throughout treatment. In this conversation: Why being a beginner can trigger perfectionism and self-judgment How creativity and knitting can support emotional wellbeing Why you don't have to be naturally talented to enjoy learning How Alice used knitting during cancer treatment What unraveling a knitting project can teach us about starting again A gift from Alice: Get 10% off her prerecorded beginner knitting course with code bangs2026.
