Wolf-Heinrich Graf von Helldorff was a high-ranking Nazi official who lived a paradoxical double life—both as a fervent early supporter of Adolf Hitler and later as a secret conspirator against him. A decorated veteran of World War I and active member of the Freikorps, Helldorff helped suppress leftist uprisings during the early years of the Weimar Republic. He rose quickly in the ranks of the Nazi Party, becoming police chief of Berlin and playing a central role in the organization of Kristallnacht, the violent pogrom that marked a turning point in the Nazi regime's persecution of Jews. Despite his early loyalty to the Third Reich, Helldorff’s perspective changed as he grew disillusioned with the regime’s excesses and internal corruption. By the early 1940s, he had joined the anti-Hitler resistance and became involved in the 20 July Plot—the most famous attempt to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. While continuing to serve as police president in Berlin, Helldorff secretly funneled support to resistance networks and provided vital intelligence to the conspirators. After the failed bomb plot in July 1944, Helldorff was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured, and sentenced to death by the infamous People's Court under Roland Freisler. He was executed by hanging at Plötzensee Prison. His life serves as a complex portrait of complicity, guilt, and eventual courage—an insider who became a traitor to tyranny.
