Night in Valletta. A narrow street of steps drops away toward the harbour, and every wall on both sides is the same warm honey colour. Enclosed wooden balconies painted deep red and green lean out from the upper floors, with lamplight showing behind a few shutters. Iron lanterns glow along the stone. At the bottom of the street the dark water begins, and the lights of the far shore sit on it. Somebody is sitting on a step with a bouzouki. Did you know? The reason the whole city is one colour is that it is made of the ground it stands on. Valletta is built from globigerina limestone quarried out of the same peninsula, and the stone comes out of the ground soft - soft enough to cut with a hand saw - and then hardens as it sits in the open air. So the city was shaped while it was still yielding, and set afterwards. The street plan is just as deliberate. After the siege of 1565 the knights laid out a whole city at once on a bare rock: a grid of streets and a ring of walls, drawn on paper before anything was built. It is a city that existed as a drawing first. And those closed wooden balconies are not only decoration. A gallarija projects out over the street and is boxed in on every side, so whoever is inside can lean out and watch everything happening below while staying out of sight themselves. Opinions differ on where the idea came from. What it is for has never been in doubt. Best for: Sleep & deep rest Winding down at the end of the day Quiet reading Long evenings 0:00 I.
