Dawn on Lake Como, in the mountains of northern Italy. The water is dark and completely flat, with low mist lying on it, and the far shore is still in blue shadow while the tops of the slopes have started to catch the light. Cypresses stand along a villa garden, and worn stone steps go straight down into the lake, where a small wooden boat is tied up. There is no engine anywhere. Somebody is playing a cello on the jetty. Did you know? The winds on this lake have names. Before dawn, a wind called the tivano comes down off the mountains and runs along the water, and the fishermen here used to go out on it. Around the middle of the day it turns and the breva comes up the lake from the south instead. People who live on these shores still plan by them. The lake is deeper than it looks - well over four hundred metres, which puts its floor below the level of the sea. It was carved by a glacier, which is also why it lies in three long narrow arms, like an upside-down Y. Some of the villages along it had no road at all until fairly recently; the front door faced the water, because the water was the way in, and stone stairways climbed from the shore up into the chestnut woods behind.
