Originally recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, the village later became home to a Knights Templar preceptory during the 12th century. The order managed farmland and estates here, giving the village the name 'Temple Guiting'. One of Temple Guiting's most important historic buildings is the Church of St Mary, founded around 1170 during the time of the Knights Templar. The church retains several remarkable medieval features, including Norman stonework and eleven carved stone corbels depicting animals, faces and unusual figures. Inside is a 15th-century font and fragments of medieval stained glass. When the Knights Templar were suppressed in the early 14th century, their estates were seized and many eventually passed to the Knights Hospitaller, another medieval religious order. Later, much of the land and many of the older village properties became associated with Corpus Christi College, Oxford, which acquired the former Templar estate during the 16th century. The village is also home to several historic Cotswold stone buildings, including the 16th century Manor Farmhouse.
