Every autumn, I find myself rewatching my favorite Tim Burton films.... there’s just no better way to set the mood for Halloween!! 🎃 This walk was heavily inspired by the signature gothic, eerie, and spooky atmosphere: towering dark gnarled trees, twisted roots, falling leaves, and the gentle roar of the river as dusk settles over Northern Ireland. Towards the end, as dusk settled over the trees, the atmosphere almost felt like stepping into the movie Twilight :o So grab a hot tea, wrap up in a warm blanket, and come wander through the forest with me. Tollymore is supposedly haunted by a banshee (the white lady) who wanders the dark trails at night. She's said to be harmless unless you hear her scream. I didn't hear anything besides the birds, I think... :o The hidden cave and the giant: Fun fact: legend says a secret cave along the Shimna River was home to a massive giant. Stories claim Fionn mac Cumhaill roamed these woods and rested by the river. Looking at the huge stone boulders, you can see why people believed it! The tree spirits (watch out for the fairies): Local folklore says the deepest parts of Tollymore are protected by the daoine sídhe (fairy folk). Superstitions warn never to damage thorn trees or disrespect stone paths, or the fairies will play tricks on you. I stayed on the track just in case!
