How We’re Planting the Future on Our 6-Hectare Property in Rural Portugal

When we moved to our six-hectare property in the Alentejo, Portugal, the land already had a story of its own — with cork oaks, holm oaks and old olive trees that had been here long before us. Since then, we’ve been slowly adding to it. In this video, we take you around the property to show you our young orchard, the trees we’ve planted in different areas, our little woods, the cork oaks we’re growing from acorns, and a couple of trees that came here with us from our previous life. We also share some of the challenges we’ve discovered along the way — frost, summer heat, irrigation, trees that didn’t survive — and some of our plans for the years ahead. Planting trees is a long-term project. Some will give us fruit quite soon. Others may take many years to become what we imagine today. And perhaps that’s part of the pleasure of it.
