Larry, The Downing Street Cat - Dead? Not Quite. Larry the Cat Outlives Another Rumour

There are few things the internet enjoys more than a catastrophe, and almost nothing it enjoys less than discovering that the catastrophe was, inconveniently, completely untrue. So it was that reports of my death briefly began scurrying around the internet before someone apparently thought it might be worth checking whether I was actually dead. I was not. This came as something of a surprise to me, since I have spent years sitting outside Downing Street watching governments arrive full of confidence and depart looking as though they have just discovered the existence of paperwork. I have therefore developed a fairly reliable expression for dealing with human political nonsense. It is the same expression I use for most things: mild disappointment. The rumour nevertheless travelled with remarkable speed. This is one of the great achievements of modern civilisation. We can now send an entirely unverified story about the death of a cat to millions of people in seconds, while still being unable to find a charger when we actually need one. Fortunately, the claim was retracted almost as quickly as it appeared, leaving the public with the comforting knowledge that I was not, in fact, dead. Given the current state of British politics, this may be the most reassuring news anyone has received all week. I have declined to comment further. There seems little point. My preferred response to political turmoil is to sit quietly, wash my paws, observe the humans making things unnecessarily complicated, and wait for someone to feed me. After all, governments come and go. Larry endures.
