The Copycat Problem in the Art World No One Wants to Talk About

I broke my podcast hiatus for this one. Copycats in the art world are everywhere right now, the conversation has gotten loud, and I had to get on a mic and address it. We get into both flavors of the problem. The viral DIY-the-painting-yourself videos that have been making the rounds (you've probably seen the cowboy art one). And the bigger, quieter, more prevalent issue of artists copying other artists. I share how I've actually navigated this with my coaching clients and gallery artists, including the conversation scripts I use, why going private and giving the benefit of the doubt almost always works better than calling someone out, and the Pinterest misunderstanding I see in my DMs almost every week. Then I get into the part nobody wants to hear. Finding your own style takes years, not weeks. The artists who shortcut it by building on someone else's work almost never build a long-term business.
