"I haven't been this absorbed in years." What happens when you make a Kimekomi doll by hand in Tokyo? At the Mataro workshop, visitors choose a boy or girl doll, pick the colors and patterns of its costume, and tuck the fabric into grooves carved into a paulownia body, the same method used for some three hundred years. The grooves are cut a little wider and deeper for first-timers, so everyone reaches the moment the face goes on.
