Inside M23-Controlled Congo: What's Really Happening in Goma? | Dr Bojana Coulibaly

What is really happening in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and how much of what we hear about the Congo war reflects the reality on the ground? This week on The Long Form Podcast, Dr. Bojana Coulibaly, a researcher in critical discourse and conflict analysis at the Kivu Research Institute in Goma, joins us for a conversation about AFC/M23, Rwanda, and the competing narratives shaping international understanding of the conflict. Drawing on her visits to M23-controlled territory, including Goma and recruitment centres, Dr. Coulibaly discusses daily life under rebel control, why young people join armed movements, the role of women in AFC/M23, and the importance of Rubaya's mineral resources. We also examine propaganda, the language of war, the relationship between Rwanda and the DRC, and the political narratives surrounding the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
