Buddy Rich never gave compliments. Every musician who ever sat in his band could tell you that. So in the spring of 1979, when the most feared man in jazz walked out onto the Tonight Show stage unannounced, knelt beside a seven-year-old boy sitting on an upturned paint bucket, and whispered six words into his ear, nobody in Studio One knew what to make of it.
The microphones didn't catch those words. The boy never repeated them on television. Johnny Carson heard them — and kept them to himself for eight years.
This is the story of a house painter from Paterson, New Jersey, who fell twenty feet and stopped talking, a little boy who taught himself the drums on his father's empty paint buckets, an eleven-minute cassette tape, and the one night Johnny Carson risked his friendship with Buddy Rich on a stack of paint cans.
This video is a dramatized retelling inspired by the lives and careers of Johnny Carson. Dialogue and certain events have been recreated for storytelling purposes.
