Does your shoulder click, pop, or make strange noises when you lift your arm? It can be unsettling, but shoulder noises don’t always mean something is wrong. What matters most is what happens along with the clicking.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, giving you the freedom to reach overhead, lift, throw, and participate in countless everyday activities. That impressive range of motion comes with a tradeoff: the shoulder relies heavily on muscles to maintain stability and keep the joint moving properly.
One important group of muscles is the rotator cuff. While many people associate the rotator cuff with strength, it also plays a major role in keeping the ball of the shoulder centered in its socket during movement. If these muscles are weak or aren’t coordinating properly, the shoulder may shift slightly as you move. That can contribute to clicking, popping, pinching, or discomfort.
Your shoulder blade, or scapula, is another key part of healthy shoulder function. Muscles surrounding the shoulder blade help control its position and movement as your arm moves. When that control is lacking, the mechanics of the entire shoulder can change. In some cases, this may be why stretching alone doesn’t resolve persistent shoulder clicking.
So, when should clicking get your attention?
If your shoulder makes noise but you have no pain, weakness, instability, or loss of motion, the clicking may simply be a normal part of how your shoulder moves. However, clicking accompanied by pain, weakness, catching, instability, or the sensation that the shoulder might give way can indicate that the joint isn’t functioning as well as it should.
The encouraging news is that many shoulder problems can respond well to the right combination of care and targeted strengthening. Improving the strength and coordination of the muscles that stabilize the shoulder and shoulder blade can support healthier mechanics and more comfortable movement.
In the attached video, we explain why shoulders can click and pop, what symptoms deserve more attention, and how improving shoulder stability may help.
