Carrera GT vs. 1963 356 Carrera 2: CEO of A. Lange & Söhne Picks a Winner | Jay Leno's Garage

Two generations of Carrera, one proper German. Jay hands the keys to his 2004 Porsche Carrera GT to Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of A. Lange & Söhne, for the first time, then puts him in the 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 four-cam to see which one he'd take home. Back in the garage, Jay pulls out his own Lange collection (not a brand ambassador, didn't get a free watch, he just likes them) to make the case he wrote about in Octane: a fine mechanical watch is built like an F1 engine, only smaller and it has to run 24 hours a day for a decade. Wilhelm walks through the watches piece by piece: the Richard Lange Tourbillon "Pour le Mérite" and its fusée-and-chain, a chain of 636 hand-assembled links you can barely see; what "constant force" actually means (think of a pull-back toy car); the pivoting dial that hides the 7, 8 and 9 until you need them; the gold chatons Wilhelm tried, and failed, to polish in his first months at the factory; the Zeitwerk, a mechanical watch with jumping digital numerals; the Lange 31, with 12 feet of mainspring, a 31-day power reserve and a torque key you use once a month; the outsize date borrowed from the five-minute clock at the Dresden opera house; the Datograph, the in-house chronograph that made the rest of the industry catch up; and a tourbillon you can stop to set the time to the second. Then it's back on the road in the 356 Carrera 2, the car John Willhoit built in the 1970s and sold for $16,000 to buy a house, and the moment of truth: old school or new school?
