The locomotive's installed diesel power rating is approximately 5,000 metric horsepower. For decades, the DF8B has been an important part of China's freight railway operations. Although newer locomotive designs have taken over many of its former duties, the DF8B can still be seen hauling freight on selected mainline and branch routes.
