Built between 1566 and 1572, the old tower at the very top of the mainland had no electricity, no running water and had already lost part of its roof, with its last tenants reportedly living in a single room around one peat fire. Over the next three years she dragged it back to life, and over the next 50 she made it the only house she ever personally owned. This is the story of the grandest woman in Britain, the emptiest house in the kingdom, and the grief that connected them.
