In 1938, at just 18, Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy arrived in London as the American ambassador's daughter and was crowned debutante of the year. Six years later, on 6 May 1944, she married William "Billy" Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington and heir to the Duke of Devonshire, in a 10-minute civil ceremony with only one member of her family present. She was a widow within 4 months. Then she fell in love again, this time with a married Protestant earl, and her own mother threatened to disown her and cut her off for good. On 13 May 1948, at 28, she died in a plane crash over the mountains of southern France, and at her funeral only one Kennedy came to stand at the grave.
