Shimokita Vox Pop - Aug 26,2026 - Tokyo Record Style is live!

Hey there, record loving friends. Brian here from Tokyo Record Style, back out on the streets of Tokyo for another *Vox Pop* — this time in Shimokitazawa. The original plan was simple: find some record collectors, talk about music, and see what happens. Instead, I ended up meeting travelers from Florida who had just spent months traveling through Australia and Indonesia, talking about Indonesian gamelan, the music they grew up with, their first concerts, and their plans to finally start collecting vinyl. Then I met **Yo OG**, a Brooklyn guy who had only been in Japan for about a week and was already making music with local friends, DJing, going to shows, exploring Tokyo, and looking extremely fresh. We talk hip-hop, house music, indie rock, Brooklyn, Japan, fashion, Supreme, BAPE, SpongeBob, Big Love Records, and what it's like to arrive in Tokyo and just completely throw yourself into the city. And that's really what Vox Pop is about. *Why talk to strangers?* Because you never know what you're going to find. Maybe you have something in common. Maybe you don't. Maybe you know absolutely nothing about their world — goths, Swifties, DJs, travelers, record collectors, whoever — but there's always some little angle that lets you connect. That's the game I like playing. There's also plenty of wandering and thinking out loud: Shimokitazawa's changing streets, the giant fences around the new station, the unbearable Tokyo summer, music, animation, Akira, SpongeBob, Feeble Little Horse, Dry Cleaning, my continuing shame over missing David Byrne, and a tribute to the late DJ Vinyl Vertigo. Not every Vox Pop is a home run. Some days are just another day at the ballpark. But we're out here, we're talking to people, and that's pretty good.
