Wanna be Startin' Somethin - A Vinyl Tag for Laura ‪@SoundoftheCrate‬

Welcome to another Tokyo Record Style vinyl tag, this time responding to a thoughtful new tag from Laura ‪@SoundoftheCrate‬ who invited the music lovers to share some of the records that have shaped us, comforted us, and become connected to important people and moments in our lives. Laura’s questions gave me a chance to dig through the collection and pull out some records with a little more personal history behind them. And since I’m coming to you from Tokyo, this one is also a little introduction to me, my musical background, and some of the records that have followed me through different chapters of my life. The five prompts took me through some very different territory: 1. An album that takes you back to your childhood Michael Jackson — Thriller and Bad Thriller was the very first record I ever bought with my own money, back when I was a kid growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Michael Jackson was absolutely everywhere, and I have some great memories of the enormous cultural moment surrounding those records. 2. A pivotal album — one that changed your perspective on music Beastie Boys — Paul’s Boutique (with a shout-out to Licensed to Ill) This was an important record for teaching me how to listen to music. It wasn't necessarily love at first listen, but the more I listened, the more I discovered. I also talk about the Pixies and Doolittle, which helped open another door in my musical life. 3. An album that got you through a difficult time Ween — Chocolate and Cheese George Harrison — All Things Must Pass One is probably an unlikely breakup/divorce survival record, while the other has become an album I return to when somebody I care about is grieving. Two very different records that have both been there for me during difficult moments. 4. An album that reminds you of somebody you care deeply about Trey Anastasio / Ghosts of the Forest — Ghosts of the Forest This one is especially personal. My friend Mike Hamill was a longtime friend, concert buddy, ish fan, and talent buyer at the Boulder Theater. Trey wrote Ghosts of the Forest as a musical meditation on the loss of his friend Chris Cottrell — and after losing Mike, the album took on an entirely different meaning for me. 5. An album from a genre you weren't familiar with that changed your perspective Primal Scream — Screamadelica Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds — Murder Ballads I talk about electronic music, Britpop, Primal Scream, and my continuing journey into Nick Cave. Rather than picking a genre I outright dislike, I interpreted this prompt as an invitation to talk about music I'm still learning how to appreciate. There are also a few other records and artists that make appearances along the way, including Daft Punk, the Beastie Boys, the Pixies, and more. One of the things I liked about Laura's tag is that it isn't really about showing off rare records or building the most impressive collection. It's about why we keep these things around, the memories attached to them, the people they remind us of, and the moments when a particular record becomes part of our lives.
