We passed through Isfahan once already, in daylight. This is the same city after dark. The river has gone still, the long bridge is lit from inside every one of its arches, and the water gives each arch back so exactly that every opening becomes a complete oval of light. Somewhere along the bank, a santur is being played - struck softly with two small wooden mallets.
Did you know? The bridge is called Si-o-se Pol, "thirty-three arches", and it has never been only a bridge. It was built as a dam as well, and its lower arcade has always been a place to sit, to meet, to drink tea and to sing - people still do, under the arches, at night. The instrument is worth a word too: a santur is a trapezoid box strung with over seventy wires, and you do not pluck it, you strike it with two feather-light hammers called mezrab. That single idea travelled in every direction from here - west it became the European dulcimer and eventually the piano, east it became the Chinese yangqin. Of all the instruments on this journey, this is the one that went the furthest.
