Toshogu Shrine is dedicated to Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. He unified Japan around the year 1600—bringing an end to the turbulent Warring States period—and implemented a policy of national isolation to prevent colonization by the Western powers that were then dominating the globe. He subsequently established the Tokugawa Shogunate, creating a sustainable & circular society that endured for over 250 years.
The shrine is located in Matsudaira-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture—the ancestral home of the Tokugawa and Matsudaira clans. The enshrined deities are Tokugawa Ieyasu, the clan's progenitor Matsudaira Chikauji, and the deity Hachiman. The site also features the well used to draw the water for Ieyasu's first bath after his birth.
