We used to pour 10W-40 into engines without thinking twice. Today, some new cars are calling for oil as thin as 0W-8.
So what changed?
In this video, we break down what those oil viscosity numbers actually mean, what the “W” stands for, how oil behaves when it gets hot and cold, and why modern engines have moved toward thinner and thinner oil.
We’ll also look at how engine design, synthetic oil technology, fuel injection, tighter manufacturing control, friction, and fuel economy all played a role—and why SAE eventually had to expand the viscosity scale below 20.
From 10W-40 all the way to 0W-8… this went a lot further than I realized.
