A Song from Tolu to Everyone
Verse 1
We've spent so much time learning how to honour Him,
careful how we speak and how we come.
We've learnt the language worthy of His greatness,
learnt to bow our heads and call Him Lord.
We know the names that tell us who He is,
we know the wonders only He could do.
But somewhere in our efforts to revere Him,
*have we forgotten He wants to be known too?*
Have we become afraid of getting closer,
as though laughter somehow makes Him small?
Have we built so much distance around His greatness
*that we barely got to know Him at all?*
Pre-Chorus
What if we don't have to guard His greatness?
What if that was never ours to do?
What if He can still be everything He is
*and still be someone we can come close to?*
Chorus
**We don't need to make Him God,
He was God before we came along.
Our friendship cannot make Him any smaller,
our questions cannot make Him less than God.**
We can laugh with Him and still be full of wonder,
we can love Him in the ordinary too.
Maybe knowing that He's God was never meant
*to keep us from discovering who He is.*
We don't need to make Him God.
*Maybe we just need to know Him.*
Verse 2
What if we stopped bringing only reverence
and brought the parts of life that seem too small?
The ridiculous thing that made us laugh this morning,
the question that makes no sense at all.
What if He could hear our disappointment
without us dressing it in prettier words?
What if we could sit with Him for no great reason,
*without needing anything from God?*
Maybe awe survives an honest friendship.
Maybe wonder doesn't disappear up close.
Maybe there are things about the One we worship
*we can only learn when we become His friends.*
Pre-Chorus
Maybe distance isn't always reverence.
Maybe closeness isn't disrespect.
Maybe we can stand in awe of who He is
*and still come near enough to know Him well.*
Chorus
**We don't need to make Him God,
He was God before we came along.
Our friendship cannot make Him any smaller,
our questions cannot make Him less than God.**
We can laugh with Him and still be full of wonder,
we can bring Him ordinary afternoons.
Maybe knowing that He's God was never meant
*to keep us from discovering who He is.*
We don't need to make Him God.
*Maybe we just need to know Him.*
Bridge
I once heard Him say He still had His authority,
whether people accepted or embraced it or not.
And those words stayed somewhere deep inside me,
*because His authority was never ours to guard.*
If His authority was never ours to give Him,
then our friendship cannot take His throne away.
Maybe we have been afraid of getting closer
*when His greatness wasn't threatened anyway.*
What if God isn't asking us to choose
between our wonder and our friendship?
What if we can bow before His greatness
*and still sit beside Him when the bowing's done?*
What if He can still be God
in all the fullness of everything He is,
*and we can finally become His friends?*
Final Chorus
**We don't need to make Him God,
we were never holding up His throne.
We can laugh with Him and still be full of wonder,
we can love Him without making Him remote.**
We can ask the questions we've been frightened of.
We can bring the lives we're actually living too.
We can honour everything we know about Him
*while still wanting to discover something new.*
Maybe we've spent enough time knowing
all the reasons He deserves our awe.
Maybe now we can come much closer,
**not to make Him any less than God,
but to finally know Him more.**
Outro
His greatness was never ours to protect,
and His throne was never ours to hold.
We don't have to spend our lives at a distance
*just to prove that we remember He's our God.*
We can honour Him and still come closer.
We can wonder and still call Him Friend.
We already know that He is God—
*now, what if we got to know Him?*
