“Opening Jodi Flop! 😬 | Saim 7, 8 | Fakhar 16, 0”
Pakistan have won both of their first two matches in the ODI Tri-Series, but one problem has been repeating: the openers. Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman have failed to give Pakistan a start in both games.
In the first match against Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi on October 18, Dilshan Madushanka removed both openers inside the first six overs. Saim Ayub was out for 7 (8 balls) and Fakhar Zaman for 16 (19 balls), and Pakistan were 32/2 after 5.5 overs. Pakistan were rescued by Salman Ali Agha’s 107 and went on to win by 37 runs.
In the second match against England on October 20, it was even worse. Gus Atkinson dismissed Fakhar Zaman on the very first ball of the innings, caught by Joe Root at short midwicket for a duck. Saim Ayub was then bounced out by Sonny Baker for 8 off 6 balls. Pakistan were 59/3 in 14.2 overs before Arafat Minhas and Hasan Nawaz changed the game, and Pakistan won by 87 runs.
So across two matches, Saim has scored 15 runs (7 and 8) and Fakhar has scored 16 runs (16 and 0). Pakistan won both games despite the openers, but this cannot go on forever, especially against stronger bowling attacks.
In this video, I break down how both openers got out, whether the problem is technique, shot selection or the batting order, and what Hesson and the team management should do before the next match against England in Lahore.
