🇬🇾❤️ PACKING DE BARREL | Sending Love Back Home | Guyanese Diaspora Memories
Who remembers packing a barrel to send home to Guyana?
Rice, flour, tin milk, cooking oil, soap, toothpaste, clothes, sneakers, perfume, chocolates, school supplies, pots, a pressure cooker—and somehow there was always one more thing Mummy wanted inside! 😂
“Packing De Barrel” is an original upbeat Indo-Caribbean Chutney Soca song celebrating a tradition familiar to generations of Guyanese families living overseas: filling a barrel with necessities, gifts, and little surprises for the people we loved back home.
Packing the barrel wasn't simply shopping.
Every payday, you might buy a few more things. Every family member had a request. Bags were marked Mummy, Daddy, Auntie, Sister, Brother, and Pickney Dem so everybody knew what belonged to whom.
Then came the real challenge:
How we fitting all of dat inside one barrel? 😂
Push down the clothes. Put the socks between the tins. Find space around the rice. Squeeze in the sneakers. Put the pressure cooker somewhere. Pack every corner.
And just when you thought the barrel was full...
“Wait! We ain't pack Mummy things yet!”
Then came the tape, the address, and finally the day the barrel began its long journey across the ocean to Guyana. 🇬🇾
But a barrel was never only about what was inside.
For Guyanese living abroad, it could represent sacrifice, hard work, family responsibility, homesickness, generosity, and staying connected to home.
A pair of shoes said:
“I remembered you.”
A dress said:
“This is for Mummy.”
A bag of sweets said:
“Give these to the children.”
And that barrel arriving at the family home could turn an ordinary day into something everybody remembered. ❤️
🎶 “Packing De Barrel” brings those memories to life with an energetic Indo-Caribbean Chutney Soca sound featuring male and female vocals, tassa, dholak, dhantal, harmonium, steelpan, Caribbean bass, Soca drums, and rhythmic DJ vocal scratching.

🇬🇾❤️ We weren't just packing rice, clothes, shoes and groceries. We were packing a little piece of ourselves and sending our love back home.
No matter how far we went... Guyana was still home.
