In February 1943, the Battle of Kasserine Pass exposed the weaknesses of the American Army during its first major confrontation with German forces in Tunisia. Facing experienced Axis troops under Erwin Rommel, American units suffered heavy setbacks at Faïd Pass and Sidi Bou Zid before German armor broke through Kasserine Pass itself. This World War II documentary examines the command failures, scattered positions, and coordination problems behind the defeat. It begins at Speedy Valley, where General Lloyd Fredendall’s II Corps headquarters was being dug into rock far behind the front, and follows the crisis as German forces threatened the Allied supply bases around Tébessa and the advance was finally checked near Thala. The story then turns to George S. Patton’s arrival in March 1943, the changes made across US II Corps, and the fighting at El Guettar, where American troops met German armor again. Rather than crediting one commander with every improvement, the film explores how hard lessons, better coordination, and battlefield experience reshaped the American Army during the North African campaign. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 The Headquarters Far Behind the Front 01:32 Why the American Army Was Unprepared 02:31 The Command Problems in Tunisia 04:20 The First Blow at Faïd Pass 05:03 Sidi Bou Zid: The American Positions Collapse 07:21 The Retreat Toward Kasserine 08:00 Rommel’s Opportunity at Kasserine Pass 09:24 The Supply Bases Are Threatened 10:21 Why the German Advance Stalled 11:25 The Race to Reinforce Thala 12:17 Rommel Withdraws 12:31 The Cost of Kasserine 14:35 Patton Replaces Fredendall 15:09 Rebuilding the American Army 16:35 El Guettar: The Next Test 17:26 The Americans Face German Tanks Again 18:32 From Defeat to Adaptation 18:52 The Meaning of Speedy Valley 19:29 The Army That Emerged From Kasserine 💬 What mattered most at Kasserine: command decisions, coordination, or lack of combat experience?
