“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” — Luke 15:20 (KJV) The prodigal son came home expecting judgment. He knew what he had done. He had wasted what his father had given him, walked away from home, and finally reached the point where he had nothing left. He planned to return not as a son, but simply hoping to be accepted as a servant. But his father was already watching for him. Before the son could repair his life, repay what he had lost, or prove that he deserved another chance, his father saw him “a great way off” and ran to him. The son returned in repentance, but he was met with compassion. That is one of the beautiful truths Jesus shows us through this parable. Sin takes us farther from God than we ever intended to go, but repentance turns us back toward the Father. We do not come home because we have finally made ourselves worthy. We come because the Father is merciful. Maybe you have wandered. Maybe you have failed badly. Maybe you feel as though you have gone too far. The prodigal son reminds us that the road back to God begins with simply turning around. Do not let shame convince you to remain in the far country. Come home. Father, thank You for Your mercy and compassion. Forgive me for the times I have wandered from You and chosen my own way. Give me a repentant heart that turns quickly back to You. Help me remember that my hope is not in making myself worthy, but in Your grace. Keep me close to You, and let my life reflect the joy of being restored to my Father. In Jesus’ name, amen.
