Elena Rybakina's US Open victory has now become much bigger than another tennis trophy. After leaving New York as a Grand Slam champion and the new World No. 1, Rybakina received an extraordinary level of recognition as two different European and Central Asian heads of state personally celebrated her historic achievement.
The first special reception came in Slovakia, where Rybakina spends significant time living and training. President Peter Pellegrini welcomed the US Open champion to the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, personally congratulating her on the title. Rybakina even presented Pellegrini with one of her tennis rackets during the visit.
Then came an even bigger honor in Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev personally welcomed Rybakina to the Akorda Presidential Residence after her return from New York. He praised not only her US Open championship and rise to World No. 1, but also the impact her success is having on young athletes across Kazakhstan.
Tokayev pointed to Rybakina's three Grand Slam championships and told her those victories would remain permanently in tennis history. He also praised the way she represents Kazakhstan both on the court and away from competition.
But the ceremony did not end with congratulations. Tokayev awarded Rybakina the **Order of Barys, Third Degree**, recognizing her outstanding sporting achievements and contribution to the development and promotion of tennis in Kazakhstan.
Rybakina responded by saying she was incredibly proud to represent Kazakhstan and grateful for the support she has received. She also made clear that becoming World No. 1 and winning the US Open have not satisfied her ambitions.
That might be the most intimidating part for the rest of the WTA.
Rybakina has now won Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open. She sits at the top of women's tennis, has been celebrated by two presidents following her New York triumph, and still believes there is much more left to accomplish.
