Coco Gauff did not need to scream, attack Aryna Sabalenka or create another personal feud. When Sabalenka’s emotions boiled over following their unforgettable French Open final, Coco answered in a completely different way. After losing 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, Sabalenka argued that Gauff won largely because of her mistakes rather than because Coco played an incredible match. She even suggested that Iga Świątek would have beaten Gauff had she reached the final. Gauff disagreed, pointing out that her defensive pressure contributed to those errors, but she refused to turn the controversy into something uglier.
The historical significance made those comments even more noticeable. Gauff became the first American woman since Serena Williams in 2015 to capture the Roland Garros singles championship. Serena remains one of the standards against which every elite American player is measured, and Coco had just added another major trophy to her own rapidly growing résumé. Instead of allowing Sabalenka’s emotional reaction to define the moment, Gauff largely let her performance speak for itself. Even when discussing the comments afterward, Coco acknowledged how painful losing a Grand Slam final can be and gave Sabalenka the benefit of the doubt.
Eventually, Sabalenka herself admitted she had crossed the line. She called her comments “completely unprofessional,” said she absolutely regretted them and privately contacted Gauff to make clear that Coco deserved the championship. The two later publicly showed there was no lasting personal feud between them. That may be the biggest takeaway from the entire firestorm: Coco did not need an explosive response to win the argument. Sabalenka reconsidered her own words, apologized and gave Gauff the credit she originally failed to give her. Serena’s legacy remains untouched, Coco’s French Open championship belongs entirely to her, and Sabalenka ultimately acknowledged that respect matters even after the most painful defeats.

Disclaimer: This video discusses Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka’s documented French Open controversy, Sabalenka’s subsequent apology, Gauff becoming the first American woman since Serena Williams to win Roland Garros, public reactions, opinions, and tennis commentary under YouTube’s Fair Use Policy (Section 107). “Shuts down,” “disrespects Serena Williams,” and “instantly regrets it” are dramatic editorial framing. There is currently no verified evidence establishing that Sabalenka directly attacked or insulted Serena Williams in connection with this controversy. Sabalenka later apologized to Gauff and acknowledged that Gauff deserved her French Open victory.
