If you've seen yesterday's upload from Chapel Road just around the corner, I had originally filmed this crossing on the same date as the second video featured. However, that video was unsatisfactory, and it took several months to finally return to this truly iconic crossing at Southampton's Dock Gates for a better video, and I succeeded nicely. As fate's plans turned out, I found myself here again a mere nine days later with Electra whilst in the area and with the luck of another train running. It's a truly iconic crossing, though just as notorious.
There seems to be no solution to either close this crossing or add any barriers, and this madly busy un-gated crossing likely has an equally mad collective risk. The likely listed dock walls and grand buildings of the old cruise terminal station are just too close to the crossing, and a real solution would be ridiculously resource-heavy and expensive. Measures such as slow speed and a crossing attendant try to mitigate this as much as reasonably possible, though. There's only so much that can do, of course, as most notably seen when an ignorant pedestrian runs out straight in front of a moving train in the second clip. Louder alarms and pedestrian signals could somewhat help, though, even if not adequate to completely remove the risk.
If you're wondering, a few seconds have been cut from the first clip when I tried to zoom in on one of the wigwags, but the camera went right out of focus. I made sure not to make the same error next time around. Hope you enjoy this video of this icon, the least-altered of the four in Southampton in recent years! It puts on quite a show.
