Café Jazz for a Slow Morning | Bach Inventions, The First Noel & Greensleeves

A quiet morning. Eight familiar melodies. A moment to remember. Eight pieces of Vintage Café, played twice through. It opens with Bach's Invention No. 3 in D major, BWV 774, one of his two-voice keyboard Inventions. Two traditional English melodies follow: The First Noel, a carol whose present form was printed in 1823 and 1833, and Greensleeves, a sixteenth-century melody. Five more Inventions lead the rest of each round: No. 7 in E minor, No. 10 in G major, No. 2 in C minor, No. 5 in E-flat major and No. 11 in G minor, which closes each round. Here they are reimagined for a vintage café: an upright piano, a double bass and soft-mallet drums throughout. The piano keeps Bach's two voices from the score and carries the two English melodies over a new café jazz accompaniment, with a cello, a clarinet, a flute, a vibraphone, an alto or tenor saxophone, a muted trumpet or a jazz guitar in the later rounds.
