A quiet winter evening. Eight familiar melodies. A moment to remember. Eight pieces of Vintage Café for the winter, played three times through. It opens with Joy to the World, set to the hymn tune "Antioch", credited to Lowell Mason. Bach's Prelude in C minor, BWV 847, follows, then two of his two-voice keyboard Inventions, No. 8 and No. 14. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is set to a tune from Mendelssohn's Festgesang, adapted by William H. Cummings. Inventions No. 13 and No. 4 lead to O Come, All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles), a hymn tune usually attributed to John Francis Wade, which closes each round. Here they are reimagined for a winter evening in a vintage café: an upright piano, a double bass and soft-mallet drums throughout. The piano keeps Bach's notes from the score and carries the carol melodies over a new café jazz accompaniment, with a vibraphone, a jazz guitar, a clarinet, a flute, a flugelhorn or a muted trumpet in the later rounds.
