Boxing Day 1976 in a British Home — Hour by Hour

Monday, 27 December 1976, in one ordinary British house, told in the order the day ran. In 1976 Boxing Day fell on a Monday. Christmas Day was a Saturday, the 26th was a Sunday, and under the rules of the time the bank holiday moved to the 27th. The Christmas Radio Times printed it that way, and every Football League match of the holiday was played that day. The day starts with no alarm and a plate under a tea towel in the larder. Then comes the visit to the other half of the family, with sherry at eleven, followed by a dinner served cold: bubble and squeak, the trifle, the last of the Quality Street. Forty-six League matches drew more than nine hundred thousand people through the gates. After that, the walk before dark, the jigsaw on the card table, the relatives leaving in the frost, and the bones going into the big pan last thing at night.
