Every September 16th, schools across Wisconsin set aside a day for a woman from Milwaukee — a literature teacher who once stood in a Berlin classroom teaching Whitman and Emerson as the country around her closed its doors one by one. In January 1937 she was home in America, with a passport and every reason to stay. She got back on the ship and sailed home to Berlin. Over the next five years she helped carry some of the German state's most closely guarded secrets out of the country. Her name was Mildred Harnack, and she became the only American woman whose fate Adolf Hitler decided personally.
