Pakistan's Hidden Alpine Lakes | The Untouched Beauty of Shundar Valley | Episode 2

Welcome to Episode 2 of our unforgettable adventure to Shundar Valley, Byar Kohistan, Dir Upper, Pakistan. In the previous episode, you saw how our journey began from Usherai Valley. Passing through Sheringal, Patrak, and Byar, we reached Dedkun Village, where the challenging off-road track to Shundar Valley officially began. After trekking nearly 7.5 kilometers, we had no choice but to camp on a narrow mountainside as darkness fell. Thankfully, by the grace of Allah, the weather stayed clear, and we spent a peaceful night surrounded by nature. The next morning brought unforgettable views. The moon was still visible while the first rays of sunlight illuminated the surrounding peaks. Crystal-clear streams, roaring waterfalls, and the fresh mountain air made for a magical start to the day. After packing our tent and enjoying a simple breakfast, we continued our journey. On the way, we crossed a mountain stream and were warmly welcomed by a local shepherd, who invited us for a cup of tea. His kindness and hospitality became one of the most memorable moments of our adventure. As we continued, we reached the breathtaking alpine meadows of Shundar, a hidden paradise visited by very few travelers. Here, we explored the first hidden alpine lake, then the second lake, while the third and final lake awaited us later in the evening. Shundar Valley is also an important mountain junction. One trail leads to Saidakai Lake, another crosses Shar Pass towards Jahaz Banda, Kund Banda, and Kumrat, while a third route descends towards Bahrain in Swat Valley. The high-altitude meadows are home to Gujjar shepherds and a few Pashtun families, who spend their summers here with their livestock, preserving a simple mountain lifestyle.
