The Dark Story of Campbell's Soup: The Fortune TWO STATES Claimed From One Dead Man The official story is a happy one. A young chemist in a Camden cannery takes the water out of soup, and a red and white can ends up in every kitchen in America. But that story leaves out the paperwork. John T. Dorrance was hired by his own uncle at seven dollars and fifty cents a week, and he paid for his lab equipment himself. By 1915 he owned the whole company. When he died in 1930, New Jersey taxed his estate as a New Jersey man. Pennsylvania said he really lived at Woodcrest, his estate on the Main Line, and taxed it too. Both state supreme courts agreed with their own state. Sixty years later his grandchildren split over whether to sell the company, and one of them gave up his American citizenship. It all comes back to a single word he signed again and again.
