When Otto Preminger assembled the cast of In Harm's Way in 1965, he put almost every major star in Hollywood into the same Navy uniform. Sixty-one years later, only two of them are still with us. This is the full In Harm's Way cast then and now story, from the April 1965 release of Preminger's black and white Pearl Harbor epic to where that extraordinary ensemble stands today.
John Wayne led it as Rock Torrey, and the Duke was gone by June 1979, taken at 72 by the cancer he had fought for more than a decade. Kirk Douglas, ferocious as the broken Commander Eddington, outlived nearly everyone he acted beside and reached an astonishing 103 before his death in February 2020. Patricia Neal filmed her role as nurse Maggie Haines only months before the strokes that nearly killed her, and this picture was playing in cinemas while she lay recovering, unable to speak; she fought all the way back and died in 2010 at 84. Henry Fonda, Burgess Meredith, Dana Andrews, Carroll O'Connor, George Kennedy, Slim Pickens, Tom Tryon and Jill Haworth have all followed them. Brandon deWilde, the boy from Shane playing Wayne's estranged son, never reached middle age at all; he was killed in a road accident in 1972 aged just 30. And James Mitchum, son of Robert, left us as recently as September 2025.
That leaves Paula Prentiss, now 88, and Barbara Bouchet, now 83, the last two faces from that huge cast still here to remember it, and what each of them went on to do after 1965 will genuinely surprise you.
