A human skull is discovered at a Boy Scout camp in Missouri. Detectives identify the victim through facial reconstruction and learn she has been missing for years. Her husband claims she fled the country. But a renowned forensic pathologist catches him in a lie, and allows the dead woman to tell her story from beyond the grave.
In this episode of Secrets of the Morgue, a bleached white skull is found lying in the grass on a Boy Scout camp near Farmington, Missouri, a quiet rural town on the edge of the Ozarks. With only a fraction of the skeleton recovered and no dental work to compare, investigators start with almost nothing. A Service Merchandise plastic bag in the shallow grave dates the burial to within the last decade, and a jeans button stamped with a brand sold only in Asia offers another clue.
Forensic anthropologist Nita Bitner determines the victim was a woman around 5 feet tall, likely of Asian descent, who had given birth at least once, and uncovers a fracture to the back of the skull with no sign of healing. After a photo superimposition rules out one missing mother, a clay facial reconstruction is released to local newspapers, and an old friend recognises the face instantly. The victim is Bunchie Nighhouse, a Thai-born mother of two who supposedly walked out on her family and never said goodbye.
Detective William Conway and renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Mary Case piece together what the bones reveal in a case that became known as "the talking skull case."
