A small town is shattered when its funeral director, Dan O'Connell, and his intern, James Ellison, are shot dead in his office in broad daylight. The case only becomes more shocking when an unlikely source reveals information only the killer would know.
In this episode of Homicide: Hours to Kill, we travel to Hudson, Wisconsin, a sleepy town on the St. Croix River where people leave their doors unlocked and hadn't seen a homicide in 25 years. Dan O'Connell was a beloved husband, father and former Pepper Fest king. James Ellison was a 22-year-old student who dreamed of becoming a funeral director and chose the O'Connell Funeral Home to learn from the best. On a cold February afternoon in 2002, both were found shot in the head, with nothing taken and no sign of a struggle.
As a rookie detective who counted Dan as a close friend races to rebuild his final 24 hours, the investigation takes him from Dan's widow and brother to a rescheduled 1pm appointment, rumours of an affair and a jealous dairy farmer. Then the FBI points detectives to the Rest of Jesus Ministries, a radical anti-embalming group whose leader had sent hundreds of funeral homes a letter threatening death. When the case goes cold, Dan's family turns to the Vidocq Society, a group of retired homicide detectives and forensic experts, and criminal profiler Richard Walter helps reframe the killing as cold, calculated and purposeful.
