You paid for a bed at a medieval inn. There is just one problem. Two strangers are already sleeping in it. And apparently... they expect you to climb in too. In late-medieval England, an inn was much more than an early version of a hotel. It was a place where travelers ate, slept, sheltered from the road, cared for their animals, exchanged news, met strangers, and prepared to continue their journeys the next morning. But if you arrived expecting your own quiet bedroom, a locked door, and a private bed... your expectations were about to collapse. In this episode of Past Was Hard, you experience one night inside a medieval English inn from the perspective of an ordinary traveler. You’ll follow the road into town after dark, enter a crowded working inn, see how travelers ate together, learn how news and rumors moved between towns, discover what kind of food you might actually receive, and finally find out what happened when there were more travelers than private beds. Because sharing sleeping space — and sometimes even sharing a bed with people you barely knew — was far less shocking in the medieval world than it would be today. The strangest part is that the system worked. You were fed. You were warm. Your horse was looked after. Your belongings were still with you. You were protected from the road. You just had a very different definition of privacy. Accommodation varied enormously depending on period, location, wealth and the individual establishment. Some travelers could obtain private chambers, while others slept in shared rooms or much more communal arrangements. Sharing beds was also not automatically treated with the same expectation of intimacy or privacy that many modern travelers would attach to it. The important difference was not that medieval people had no idea what comfort was. It was that warmth, shelter, food, safety and company could matter much more than having a room entirely to yourself.
