Could you survive a single day helping build the Great Pyramid of Giza?
Around 4,500 years ago, thousands of people were involved in one of the largest construction projects the ancient world had ever seen.
And despite what movies often show, the workers who built the pyramids were not simply masses of chained slaves.
They were quarrymen, haulers, craftsmen, administrators, bakers, boat crews, tool specialists, and laborers working inside an enormous organized system.
In this episode of Past Was Hard, you experience one day inside that world.
You’ll see how limestone was cut from the Giza plateau, how multi-ton blocks were hauled on wooden sledges, how workers were fed, what happened when people were injured, how fine limestone traveled from Tura by water, and why building the Great Pyramid required much more than simply dragging stones through the desert.
And by the end of the day, after all that heat, dust, rope, stone, and effort...
you may have helped move just one block.
Out of roughly 2.3 million.

Archaeological research for this episode draws heavily on discoveries at Giza, including evidence from the pyramid-builders’ settlement, quarry sites, worker remains, provisioning systems, and ancient records such as the Diary of Merer.
The archaeological evidence points to a highly organized labor system involving workers, craftsmen, managers, food production, storage, tools, transport, and waterways - all contributing to the construction of Egypt’s pyramid complexes.
