What would you do if the Black Death reached your street — and someone you loved was already sick?
Florence, 1348.
Your neighbor was healthy yesterday.
Today, his shutters never open.
By noon, men are carrying him out beneath a sheet.
Then you hear a cough from the room behind you.
Your sister says she feels cold.
She is burning with fever.
And you have absolutely no idea what is causing it.
In this episode of Past Was Hard, you experience the Black Death from the perspective of an ordinary person living in medieval Florence as the city begins to collapse around you.
You’ll see how normal life continued even as the first warning signs appeared, what Florentines believed was causing the disease, how officials and religious communities responded, what plague symptoms could look like, and why even caring for someone you loved could become terrifying.
You’ll also face the same impossible choices people living through the outbreak faced.
Stay with your family?
Leave Florence?
Lock yourself inside?
Trust the remedies people around you believe in?
Or keep helping the sick even when getting close to them may put your own life at risk?
As funerals become shorter, houses close, churchyards fill, and familiar faces disappear, Florence is still physically the same city.
The same streets.
The same buildings.
The same church towers.
But the people who made it feel like home are vanishing.
And even if you survive...
survival does not necessarily mean getting your old life back.

Historical accounts of the Black Death describe a world in which ordinary social customs, family relationships, burial practices, and daily routines could break down under the pressure of mass illness and fear.
This episode draws in part on descriptions associated with Giovanni Boccaccio’s account of plague-stricken Florence, alongside modern understanding of Yersinia pestis, flea-borne transmission, and pneumonic plague.
The people living through the outbreak did not have germ theory, antibiotics, laboratories, or microscopes.
They had observation, rumor, religion, tradition, fear, and whatever choices they could make with the information available to them.
