Alessandria - A Visual Interpretation of David Hicken’s Music

ALESSANDRIA Composed and performed by David Hicken Visual interpretation by Viviana When I hear Alessandria, I see history, passion, dreams and adventure unfolding before me. I was originally going to upload photographs taken during one of my trips to Egypt many years ago. However, I soon realised that they could not fully convey the dramatic story of Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexandreia) through the ages. Whether David wrote this epic piece with Alexandria in mind, I do not know. Most likely, it takes its name from the Alessandria organ (located in the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, in the city of Alessandria, in Italy's Piedmont region). Yet as I listen, my thoughts travel elsewhere. I imagine Alexander the Great founding his city, the City of Alexander. I see scholars gathering in the great Library of Alexandria. I see the Lighthouse of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, rising above the Mediterranean and guiding ships through the darkness. As the music unfolds, I see the passing centuries: the age of Cleopatra, the arrival of the Romans, the earthquakes that gradually damaged and eventually destroyed the great Lighthouse, and, centuries later, the construction of Fort Qaitbay by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay upon the same historic site. In just a few short minutes, I imagine nearly eighteen centuries of history. As an admirer of David Hicken and his music, I began this project to create visual companions to some of his beautiful compositions. These videos are not only a tribute to his work, but also a reflection of the places, stories and images I imagine as I listen. I am neither a computer expert nor a professional photographer or videographer. However, I am learning as I create, and each video, whether filmed by me or created with the help of AI, is made with sincerity, care and a love of music. I simply hope to bring music and imagery together in a way that makes life a little brighter. David Hicken's music does exactly that, and I truly hope you enjoy these videos. With gratitude to David Hicken for his music and for his kind permission to use it in this project.
