Can a $500 aftermarket A/C system actually keep a 1977 Toyota Celica cool? In Episode 7 of Messer’s Garage, I’m finding out!
This time I’m tackling something this old Celica desperately needs: AIR CONDITIONING! I picked up a roughly $500 aftermarket A/C system and started figuring out how to make it work in my heavily modified 1977 Toyota Celica GT.
In this episode, I mount the A/C compressor, tackle the electrical wiring, start getting the system laid out, and—as usual—come up with a slightly questionable garage-engineering solution along the way. Instead of using traditional ducting for the vents, I decided to experiment with pool hose. Is it the right way to do it? Maybe not. Does it work? That’s what makes projects like this fun!
This Celica is far from stock, so installing a universal aftermarket air conditioning system isn't exactly a bolt-in affair. There’s plenty of figuring things out, adapting parts, wiring, fabrication, and making what I have work with this crazy build.
If you’ve been following the project, you know this 1977 Toyota Celica GT is sitting on a Lexus SC400 chassis and is being built with a Toyota/Lexus 1UZ-FE V8. Every episode gets it a little closer to becoming the ridiculous restomod I’ve had in my head.
If you enjoy classic Toyota builds, 1UZ swaps, garage fabrication, DIY car projects, aftermarket A/C installs, restomods, custom cars, and occasionally questionable ideas, you’re in the right place.
Subscribe to Messer’s Garage and follow along as I keep building the ’77 Celica, working on cars and guitars, and seeing just how far I can take these projects.
