The name itself is very old. Early forms of Wilsford appear in Anglo-Saxon records before the Norman Conquest, while the settlement was later recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The surrounding landscape is even older. This part of Wiltshire contains extensive evidence of prehistoric activity, including ancient field systems, earthworks and burial mounds. The chalk downland surrounding Wilsford has been occupied and farmed for thousands of years. For much of its later history, Wilsford remained a small agricultural community. Farming shaped everyday life here, while its relatively isolated position helped prevent the large-scale development seen in many other villages. The village church also has medieval origins, with evidence of a church here dating back to at least the 12th century. Although altered and restored over subsequent centuries, it remains an important reminder of the village's long history. Wilsford's population has never been particularly large, and relatively little modern development has taken place.
