German Romantic composer, Carl Reinecke, stood in the shadow of Brahms for many years. However, Reinecke made a name for himself as a composer and toured as a pianist in Denmark and Germany. He resided in Copenhagen and then studied with Mendelssohn and Schumann. Much of his life was dedicated to teaching at the Leipzig Conservatory and conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra, also in Leipzig. Most of his chamber music compositions are well-known along with a flute sonata and other works. The Sextet in B-Flat Major, Op.271, composed in 1904, has a unique instrumentation of wind quintet and a second horn. The third movement opens with bassoon octaves, and then melodic figures between the other five instruments with flourishes in flute, oboe, and clarinet. The B Section is a waltz and then the opening figures return in B-Flat Major. At the Coda, 1st Horn plays that prominent theme from the second movement, but at a much faster tempo to conclude the work. Performed in concert at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Cudahy Luke Sattler, Flute Skylar Kelley, Oboe Donna Bizub, Clarinet Mike Keegan and Rachel Jacobson, Horn Eric Heitkemper, Bassoon
