Kilchoman 13 Year Old: Video 234; And it's affordable:

Video 234: There are some noticeable similarities between Kilchoman distillery on Islay, Scotland and Shelter Point distillery (that I lived next door to) on Vancouver Island next to the Oyster River. The farm land to the Shelter Point distillery had already been purchased by the Evans family when Kilchoman was founded by Anthony and Kathy Wills. Both are farm distilleries known for their "Field to the Bottle" operation. I had worked on the UBC farm prior to Patrick Evans and the two other partners started the distillery. I also had also worked with one of those original partners, Jay Oddleifson, but that's another story to tell at another time. Kilchoman has a uniqueness on Islay because it is surrounded by barley fields and isn't located next to the ocean. The operation is all in-house, from harvesting the barley in the fields to bottling the single malt whisky. I really enjoyed doing this Kilchoman review because of my connection with Shelter Point distillery and seeing the similarities to the Kilchoman distillery. Anthony Wills founded Kichoman in 2005, the same year that Patrick Evans purchased the UBC (Shelter Point) farm. The Shelter Point distillery buildings were started 5 years later so Kilchoman Distillery has a 5 year head start on Shelter Point in releasing it's ten and twelve year old age statement whiskies. Kilchoman aged whiskies are much more expensive and harder to get (here in Canada) than the Shelter Point Ten or Twelve Year Old Single Malt. The Kilchoman 13 year old is finally one of their longer aged whiskies that I could find and afford. So are the Kilchoman aged whiskies worth the price that customers are paying? Let's take another whisky journey; this time to the only farm distillery on Islay, the Kilchoman Distillery. Enjoy the video.
